The Tufunzeni Teacher Awards stand as a testament to our profound commitment to supporting and celebrating the exceptional educators who shape the future of Kenya. This event is more than a ceremony; it is a platform dedicated to recognizing those whose dedication, resilience, and groundbreaking contributions are transforming education and empowering our communities. Our mission is to raise the public image of the teaching profession, and this platform is our way of saying thank you.

About the Awards

The Tufunzeni Teacher Awards are built on the foundational belief that teachers are the catalysts for a better future. Tufunzeni’s core mission is to empower individuals and invest in underserved communities. Through this event, we are creating a platform to highlight the extraordinary efforts of dedicated educators who, often in difficult conditions, are providing a better future for their students.

Eligibility Criteria

General Eligibilty

Applicants must:

  • Be a teacher, school leader, or educator working in Kenya in a recognized learning institution (public, private, international, or TVET)

  • Be either:

  • Registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), OR

  • Formally employed in an institution delivering a recognized national or international curriculum (e.g., CBE, 8-4-4, IGCSE, IB, or equivalent)

  • Be actively engaged in teaching or educational leadership within the 2025–2026 period (or within the past 12 months)

  • Be based in Kenya and demonstrate measurable impact on learners, schools, or communities

  • Be nominated by themselves or by others (self-nominations strongly encouraged)

  • Submit:

  • A 500-word impact narrative

  • One recommendation letter

  • Optional supporting evidence (max 10MB per file)

  • Have no record of disciplinary or ethical violations​​

Nominations open to both Kenyan and non-Kenyan educators working in Kenya

Applications are welcome from educators across all regions of the country

Award Categories

  1. The Teacher of the Year Award: This category honors the overall most outstanding Kenyan educator who demonstrates exceptional all-around excellence in teaching, student outcomes, and inspiration. It recognizes teachers who go beyond their duties to create lasting positive change in their schools and communities. Eligibility: Open to all teachers with at least 5 years of experience; emphasis on holistic impact.

  2. The Lifetime Achievement Award: This award celebrates veteran educators who have made long-term, transformative contributions to education over their career, such as mentoring generations of students or influencing policy. It acknowledges sustained dedication and legacy-building. Eligibility: Teachers with 20+ years of experience; focus on enduring influence rather than recent activities.

  3. The Early Years Educator Award: Recognizing excellence in pre-primary or lower primary education (ages 3–8), this category honors teachers who excel in foundational learning, play-based methods, and early childhood development, laying the groundwork for lifelong success. Eligibility: Teachers working with young learners; emphasis on age-appropriate pedagogy and child-centered approaches.

  4. The Green Educator Award: This category recognizes teachers leading environmental education or sustainability initiatives, such as school-based conservation, waste management, or climate advocacy, inspiring students to address ecological challenges. Eligibility: Teachers promoting sustainability; evidence of student-led projects or community environmental impact required.

  5. The Early Career Educator Awaard: Honoring teachers with less than 5 years of experience who show exceptional promise, innovation, and impact, this award encourages emerging talent in the profession. Eligibility: Less than 5 years teaching; focus on potential and early achievements.

  6. The School Leadership Excellence Award: This award celebrates headteachers, principals, or administrators who demonstrate outstanding leadership in improving school performance, teacher development, or student outcomes through effective management and policy implementation. Eligibility: School leaders; evidence of school-wide improvements or team mentoring required.

  7. The Inclusive Educator Award: Recognizing teachers who support marginalized groups (e.g., students with disabilities, girls, refugees, or those from low-income backgrounds) through adaptive teaching, creating equitable learning environments. Eligibility: Teachers promoting inclusivity; examples of accommodations or advocacy needed.

  8. The Shaper of Stars Award: This category honors teachers fostering student talent in extracurricular activities like sports, music, drama, or film, helping learners develop skills beyond academics. Eligibility: Teachers involved in extracurriculars; evidence of student achievements (e.g., competitions, performances) required.

  9. The Teacher Educator Award: Celebrating educators who excel in training or mentoring other teachers, such as through workshops, peer coaching, or professional development programs like those offered by Tufunzeni. Eligibility: Teachers with mentoring roles; evidence of impact on colleagues (e.g., testimonials from trainees) essential.

  10. The Social Media Educator Award: This award recognizes teachers using social media platforms (e.g., X, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok) to share educational content, inspire peers/students, or promote teaching best practices. Eligibility: Teachers with active online presence; links to profiles and metrics (e.g., engagement, reach) required.

  11. The Innovation in Teaching Award: Honoring teachers who employ creative teaching methods, such as ICT integration, competency-based curriculum adaptations, or novel pedagogies, to enhance learning. Eligibility: Teachers demonstrating innovation; examples of tools or techniques and their outcomes needed.

  12. The Most Resilient Educator Award: This category celebrates educators who have bounced back from significant tragedy, setbacks, or odds (e.g., personal loss, school crises, resource shortages), continuing to make a positive impact. Eligibility: Teachers with documented resilience stories; evidence of recovery and continued contributions required.

Nominations are open to educators working in recognized public, private, international, and TVET institutions in Kenya.

To nominate a teacher:

  • Confirm the nominee’s current teaching or educational leadership role in Kenya (2025–2026, within the past 12 months, or retired for the Lifetime Achievement Award)

  • Select the most appropriate award category

  • Complete the short nomination form with basic information about the educator and why you believe they deserve recognition

  • Optional supporting materials (photos, links, reports, videos, testimonials, etc.) may also be submitted

👉 Selected nominees may be contacted and invited to complete the full application form themselves.
