Building the Future of Learning Together: Reflections from the Inaugural Freedom 250 EdTech Innovators Summit

What does the future of learning look like?

That was the question that brought together educators, school leaders, EdTech innovators, universities, development partners, policymakers, and technology leaders for the inaugural Freedom 250 EdTech Innovators Summit, held on 1st and 2nd July 2026 at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

Organized by Tufunzeni in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Nairobi, the two-day summit created a platform for meaningful conversations on how innovation can strengthen education and prepare learners for a rapidly changing world.

Beyond Technology

While Artificial Intelligence featured prominently throughout the summit, one message remained consistent: technology is only valuable when it improves teaching and learning.

Across keynote addresses, panel discussions, practical demonstrations, and breakout workshops, participants explored how education technology can support teachers, expand access to quality learning, strengthen school leadership, and equip young people with the skills they need for the future.

As classrooms continue to evolve, the summit challenged participants to move beyond asking "What technology should we adopt?" and instead ask, "How can technology help teachers teach better and learners learn better?"

A Community of Innovators

One of the defining strengths of the summit was the diversity of voices in the room.

Teachers shared classroom innovations alongside startup founders developing digital learning platforms. School leaders exchanged ideas with university researchers, while development partners and technology companies explored opportunities to work more closely with educators.

The exhibition space showcased a vibrant cross-section of Kenya's growing EdTech ecosystem, featuring organizations demonstrating solutions in digital learning, STEM education, school management, immersive learning, teacher professional development, assessment, and educational content.

Participants had the opportunity to interact directly with innovators, ask questions, test products, and imagine new possibilities for their own institutions.

Partnerships that Matter

A recurring theme throughout the summit was that meaningful education transformation cannot happen in isolation.

Panel discussions highlighted the importance of partnerships between educators, innovators, government, universities, and development partners in ensuring that innovation reaches every learner—including those in underserved and marginalized communities.

The summit also celebrated the growing collaboration between Tufunzeni and the U.S. Embassy Nairobi in expanding opportunities for Kenyan educators through professional learning, English language initiatives, educational exchanges, and innovation-focused programming.

Putting Teachers at the Centre

For Tufunzeni, the summit reaffirmed a simple belief: teachers remain the most important drivers of educational transformation.

Technology should empower educators—not replace them.

Speaking during the summit, Dennis Omolo, Executive Director of Tufunzeni, emphasized this vision:

"Technology will not replace great teachers. It should help teachers teach better and learners learn better. Our responsibility is to ensure that innovation serves education, not the other way around."

This philosophy shaped every aspect of the summit—from practical workshops to discussions on AI, digital literacy, leadership, and classroom innovation.

Looking Ahead

The conversations may have ended, but the work is only beginning.

The Freedom 250 EdTech Innovators Summit demonstrated the incredible potential that exists when people from different parts of the education ecosystem come together around a shared purpose.

Participants left not only with new knowledge, but also with new partnerships, fresh ideas, and renewed optimism about the future of education in Kenya.
